Baby News

We have some news about the baby. As you may know we had some doctors appointments last week. Those appointments were fairly normal, a regular check up on Friday and an ultrasound Thursday, to see how the baby was growing. At the ultrasound we got to see the baby (pictures are posted) and after the ultrasound I got my first non-stress test. They hooked me up and monitored the baby's heartbeat, movement and my contractions. This went well. The baby scored its first 100% on this test (10/10) which we are VERY grateful for.

After the non-stress test we finally got to talk to a doctor. The doctor told us that the baby has IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction). Basically this means that the baby weighs less than 90% of other babies at the same gestational age; or in our case less than 95%. The baby has asymetrical IUGR which means that it has a closer to normal sized head and the rest of the body is small. Nothing I've done causes this and from what I can find if you aren't a smoker, aren't a heaver drinker while pregnant and don't have pre-eclampsia no one really says why your baby has IUGR. Also, there isn't much I can do besides keep a good diet, stay well hydrated and sleep on my left side. (All things I've done throughout the pregnancy.)

This means that I get to go back and have ultrasounds and non-stress tests every week until either the baby is born or the baby grows to a size that is above the 10th percentile. If the baby stays as small as it currently is we will likely be induced a few weeks early (around 3 weeks early).

Other than being super small (current estimated weight is 2lbs 15 ounces) the baby is healthy! The baby is surounded by plenty of fluid and is getting good blood flow through the umblical cord. This is very good!

Watch for updates. I'll try and post after Thursday's appointments and let you know how everything looks. (We might get more pictures!)

  1. Hey Buck, any chance the estimated gestational age could be off? And, has your doc noticed that you're ahem... on the vertically challenged side of things?, suggesting you might make small babies? Anyway, even if IUGR is the cause, 100% on the non-stress test sounds great, and I'm sure Baby L will keep getting high marks. Good luck on Thursday, and keep us posted. Much love, Meghan
